Ronaldo for Manchester  City?  Just can’t be true says Rooney

Wayne Rooney has voiced his “doubts” over his former Manchester United team-mate, Cristiano Ronaldo, joining Manchester City.

Ronaldo has been heavily linked with a sensational transfer to the Citizens and has reportedly ‘agreed terms’ with the Red Devils’ bitter rivals.

The pair overcame that wink incident at the 2006 World Cup to form of the most deadly partnerships in Premier League history as United claimed three successive Premier League titles before the current Juventus superstar left Old Trafford to sign for Real Madrid in a world-record transfer deal worth £80million.

Rooney, who now manages Championship outfit Derby County, believes he “can’t see” the ex-Red Devils No.7 wearing sky blue.

Ahead of Derby’s match with their own rivals, Nottingham Forest on Saturday, the 35-year-old said: “It’s an interesting one but I can’t see it.

“I think Cristiano has got a very good legacy at Manchester United and I know how proud he is as a player and a person. I can’t see it, but it’s football so you never know.”

There have been players who have represented both Manchester clubs such as Carlos Tevez, who also packed his bags in 2009.

But Rooney believes Ronaldo is different due to his superior standing as one of football’s best-ever players.

“There have been a few that have done it but no one at Cristiano’s level,” he said.

Obviously Peter Schmeichel and Andy Cole, but I just can’t see that as an option for him really.

“Financially of course he doesn’t need to do it. I think it’s more likely that it’s PSG he goes to.”

However, the Rams boss twice handed in a transfer request during his time as a Red Devil on the way to becoming the club’s all-time top goalscorer, with Chelsea being the club he reportedly wanted to join.
