Sunderland teen Okoronkwo set to join Iwobi at Everton

Sunderland teen and Nigeria born left winger Francis Okoronkwo is on the verge of joining Everton

The Daily Mail says Everton have swooped to sign Sunderland striker Okoronkwo after agreeing a deal worth up to £1million for the highly rated 16-year-old.

The teenager caught the eye for the Under-18s last season and several top-flight clubs were chasing the 6ft 3ins frontman.

Sunderland were determined to keep Okoronkwo but Everton have persuaded the player to move to Goodison Park, where he will enter their academy once the transfer is ratified by the Premier League.

The Black Cats, now under the ownership of Swiss trust-fund billionaire Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, included the schoolboy in the group that travelled to Wembley for their EFL Trophy Final victory in March, a move that was intended to ginger him to commit his to the club.

A host of Sunderland’s top young players have departed in recent seasons. While the likes of Josh Maja and Joel Asoro left after making senior breakthroughs, academy stars Joe Hugill and Logan Pye have also departed to make big moves, both joining Manchester United.

Okoronkwo departs after an impressive season with the League One side’s U18s. In 17 appearances in the U18s Premier League, the attacking prodigy managed three goals and three assists.

With a move to Everton now on the cards, Okoronkwo will be looking to make a good impression at Goodison Park in an effort to break into Rafa Benitez’s first-team.
