W/Cup Qualifier: Togo host Namibia in search of a timely boost

Both Togo and Namibia will be eyeing a much-needed boost when they meet in a CAF second-round 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifying match at Stade de Kégué in Lome on Sunday.

Kick-off is at 6pm CAT (SA, GMT+2).

The Sparrowhawks got their group-stage campaign off to a losing start, going down 2-0 to Senegal in Thies on Wednesday.

Togo held their own for most of the encounter, but were ultimately outdone by a quality Senegal side who are currently the top ranked team on the African continent.

“We defended well,” Togo head coach Paulo Duarte said before reiterating that the West African nation is currently in a rebuilding phase; a far cry from the side that qualified for the 2006 Fifa World Cup tournament.

“The current Togo is different, there is a lot of work to be done.

“The players applied the instructions well [against Senegal] but they lacked speed,” he added.

Namibia opened their 2022 World Cup qualifying Group H campaign with a 1-1 draw to Congo at the Orlando Stadium in South Africa.

Playing at the Soweto venue after their usual home grounds in Windhoek were deemed below standard by CAF, the Brave Warriors claimed the lead via Charles Hambira in the first half, but were pegged back when the defender guided the ball into the back of his own net in the second.
