World Cup Qualifier: Rwanda, Kenya set for East African tussle

Both Rwanda and Kenya will be desperate to end this month’s international window on a high when they meet in a CAF second-round 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifying match at Stade Régional Nyamirambo in Kigali on Sunday.

Kick-off is at 3pm CAT (SA, GMT+2).

Amavubi sit bottom of Group E after losing 1-0 Mali in Morocco earlier this week. Rwandan goalkeeper Emery Mvuyekure denied Moussa Djenepo from the penalty spot but could do nothing to keep out Moldova-based Adama Traore minutes later, with what proved to be the defining moment of the match.

Kenya were held to a 0-0 draw by East African neighbours Uganda in Nairobi, in a result which does the Harambee Stars little favour in their quest to advance from a competitive group.

But despite an unconvincing performance to kick off their group-stage campaign, Kenyan head coach Jacob Mulee feels that there is no cause for concern just yet.

“I cannot say it is a bad outing, the journey has just started, and for us, we started with a point which is a plus,” Mulee told Goal in the aftermath.

“We now have to focus on our next assignment against Rwanda where we will be targeting all three points.”

This will be the first meeting between the two nations since a 2-0 win for Kenya in the 2017 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.
